Basic Picture Frame Theory

Alright guys, I tried to break this down as well as I could for you so that way you can see this in action, and relate it to interactions.

In this clip, Mimi is trying to pick up Roger. Notice it's all done with framing mainly. Those of you who have heard me talk about my picture frame theory or who have read about it this is a good example of it.

She is building several types of frames throughout this interaction. This is what would be called a beginner PU in that she is building these frames mostly one after the other instead of all together. Notice: the original frame she wants is the relationship with him. Thats her end goal, but she has to go through the motions with him.

Attraction, comfort, sexual attraction, seduction, I may have missed a few things in here, but for the most part that is whats happening in the video. Read my notes in parenthesis () actions are in brackets [] and the text is regular.

Enjoy! I'll be breaking down more videos here sometime soon. If any of you have any in-field videos I'd be happy to break down those in terms of frames as well.

Roger was toast from the beginning in this video anyway. Just pointing that out.

But lets relate Picture Frame Theory shall we...



Before a person can get what they want they have to make sure they can get the other person to agree to it. I.E. they have to make sure that their frames are set the way the person who is trying to get something needs them to be set. Mimi wanted the relationship (white box) but before she can get that she has to make sure attraction is there (red box), she has to qualify him(grey box) build comfort (black box), and build the sexual frame (blue box) and elicit emotional frame(green box) to get her relationship.

Framing via Rent – Light my candle

[ROGER]

[MIMI enters, holding a candle and looking for a match;]

Weak on my feet (another side of the frame, red box, im helpless frame again, social taboo to turn her down)
Would you light my candle? (forced action frame after she set the frame another side, red box, turned off the heat, weak and helpless, enforcing the taboo)
What are you staring at? (Bait for attraction frame, she knows what he’s looking at, first side of blue box, first comfort, black box)

[ROGER]

Nothing
Your hair in the moonlight (He has fallen into her attraction frame already, he just enforced the last side of the red box,)
You look familiar (semi reframe on his part, he places the first side of the green box)
[He lights her candle. MIMI starts to leave, but stumbles.]
Can you make it? (She reframed with an internal action frame and ignored his attempt since he was trying to take over the attraction frame (red box), by stumbling, makes him ask if she’s ok, second side to black box, comfort)

[MIMI]

Just haven't eaten much today (reinforcing her frame attraction, red box)
At least the room stopped spinning. (more reinforcement, she’s baiting him to chase her social taboo)
Anyway. What?

[ROGER]

Nothing
Your smile reminded me of – (he bought the chase frame, second side of green box, first side of sexual frame, blue box )

[MIMI]

I always remind people of -- who is she? (third side of green box)

[ROGER]

She died. Her name was April (fourth side, and he just reinforced the emotional side, third comfort side, black box)

[MIMI discreetly blows out the candle.] (frame was going somewhere (emotionally) she didn’t want it to go, so she re-directs to her original frame)

It's out again (redirect bringing the emotion back up to good karma)
Sorry about your friend (being socially acceptable but then immediately moves on, down playing it to a friend role, not a relationship since that’s what she is looking for notice the tonality change to the next line (Shafts sub personalities post from ET’s blog))
Would you light my candle? (restating the original frame that’s already been established)

[ROGER lights the candle. They linger, awkwardly.]

[ROGER]

Yeah. Ow! (creating the tension, and then breaking it, rapport break, starting to really get into the creating chemistry between the two of them here )

[ROGER]

Oh, the wax -- it's -- (he bought further into her frame here)

[MIMI]

Dripping! I like it -- between my – (first boundary of sexual frame, creating the tension, notice tonality (you can actually talk to both sub personalities with practice) she comes on a little to strong with her body language here, second side to blue box)

[ROGER]

Fingers. I figured... (the same as ASD here on his part, he’s not at buying temperature yet)

[MIMI exits. ROGER heads back toward his guitar on the table.] (she play indifference and walks away)
[There is another knock, which he answers.]

It blew out again? (reverting back to the frame that was previously established since that is now their basis of rapport sorta challenging it at this point)

[MIMI]

No -- I think that I dropped my stash (disqualifying, deferring value now, places more value in something else instead of him, taking his mind off the frame since he is trying to destroy that original frame, trying to build more comfort, black box)

[ROGER]

I know I've seen you out and about (he’s trying to push his frame)
When I used to go out
Your candle's out (using her frame to try and keep commonalities and keep talking to her)

[MIMI]

I'm illin' --
I had it when I walked in the door
It was pure --
Is it on the floor?( after he has re-confirmed the original frame the right way, changing the subject, the first frame being the first wall of the relationship frame she really wanted)

[ROGER]

The floor? (buying into the new boundary of the original frame she wanted) (second wall of relationship she really wanted)

[MIMI gets down on all fours and starts searching]
[the floor for her stash. She lookss back at ROGER,]
[who is staring at her again.]
